DE APPEL ARTS CENTRE

De Appel is an internationally oriented arts centre located in Amsterdam. Since 1975 it has functioned as a site for the research and presentation of contemporary visual art through exhibitions, publications and discursive events. De Appel also functions as a platform for performances by visual artists, choreographers and theatre makers.

Since 1994 de Appel has hosted a nine month long Curatorial Programme that offers emerging international curators a condensed package of experiences and skills that can be used as tools for the development of their professional careers.

The programme encompasses an array of theoretical seminars, workshops, field trips, assignments and encounters. It has a special thematic focus on 'context-responsive' curating and the presentator of art in the 'public sphere'.

De Appel has maintained a reference and research library since her opening in 1975. The collection of about 10000 titles is strongly linked to the history of de Appel, the artists whose works were shown (1184 artists so far) and the Curatorial Programme.
