EXHIBITION DE APPEL (SELECTION)
- EXHIBITION - NOV 2006 - JAN 2007, DE APPEL
Falke Pisano, Chillida (Forms & Feelings)
Falke Pisano makes lectures, which are sometimes live and sometimes recorded and are often accompanied by a publication or a series of images. This 'research' is the artist's attempt to survey and analyse thinking and perception in relation to art. The work in de Appel is called 'Chillida (Forms & Feelings)'. In this slide and sound piece, Pisano reflects on subjective relationships with the classic work of abstract sculpture by Chillida called 'Comb Of The Winds'. Read more

Stefanie Seibold, A Reader and Reader Wallpaper
Stefanie Seibold presents two interconnected projects. Her publication 'A Reader' is a series of three posters, which visitors recieved when visiting de Appel. 'A Reader' is a visual collection of disparate materials, from photos to newspaper articles, drawings, literary quotes, pop lyrics, propaganda slogans, and manifestos.
Seibold brings this material together to read feminist consciousness in a playful and eclectic way. Secondly she shows an installation in the Shadow Cabinet called 'Reader Wallpaper' which plays with a similar index system as her post piece and provides a backdrop for showing a section of the de Appel archive. Karl Holmqvist, Scumbags & Cie
In his installation called 'Scumbags & Cie' Holmqvist pays homage to the artist Yayoi Kusama by re-making certain elements of her spectacular visceral installations. He installs on plinths certain fetish-like objects for example 'Black Kusama Shoes' and a bag called 'Black Kusama Refugee Bag'. It connotes her distinctive style but is rendered by his own hand. He accompanies the installation with a large print called 'Joke Painting'; and a photocopy edition called 'Sex and Drugs'. Read more

Frances Stark, Structures that fit my opening (...)
The writings and drawings of Frances Stark think about the performativity of feminism. In her presentation for de Appel called 'Structures that fit my opening and other parts considered in relation to their whole' the artist accounts with exacting precision and humour for her own position and the balance of acting as an artist, a teacher, a woman and a mother. She wonders how to work in a complex manner beyond the prescribed limits of each 'seperate' role. Stark organises her project here around a Powerpoint presentation. Read more

Haegue Yang, Afterimage
In her installation 'Afterimage' Haegue Yang re-explores her project 'Sadong 30', which is the address of her derelict and abonded family home in Incehon. This project negotiates this very particular construction of a place, a possible home, interwoven with the condition of her personal history, that house and the underdeveloped suburban city.
In 'Afterimage' she 'remembers' and reworks certain elements of this project in Incehon which she will show for the exhibition at de Appel. 'Gymnastics of the Foldables' is a series of black and white photographs, which depict a clothes rack in many different positions. The rack develops almost a human quality as its stretches and bends like a human body does. It might also refer to Martha Rosler's famous work 'Semiotics of the Kitchen'. Read more
